Description
According to legend, the We people »originally came out of the earth near the eastern foot of the eastern Heerok range [East Manipur Hills], but in Kubbo valley [note 1], in the higher ground immediately under the hills at a place named Mungsa« (BROWN, R 1870: 124). Keyword: Emergence cave. SITUATION: Unknown but »there is a place of that name in Kubbo valley« (HODSON, T C 1989: 15 note 4) and the »Kubo valley« was ceded to Burma (Myanmar) in 1834 (MACKENZIE, Alexander 1884: 171).
NOTE 1: »Kubbo valley« (BROWN, R 1870: 118) or »Kubo valley« (McKENZIE, Alexander 1884 / 1995: 171) is indicted as the area »Kabaw« (N24°15': E094°22') above the banks of the Yu River (AMS sheet NG46-15 Imphal, U502 series, 1960 edition) and as »Kabaw Valley« in the INDIAN ROAD ATLAS (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 64 C1 C2) in the Sagaing zone of Burma (renamed Myanmar, Slorcdesh, etc.) adjacent east of the Chandel district (Manipur State, India). »On the outbreak of the first Burmese War in 1824, the Burmans invaded Chachar and Assam, as well as Manipur … A force of sepoys and artillery being sent towards Cachar, and a levy of Manipuris being formed under British officers, not only were the Burmese expelled from the Manipur valley, but the Kubo valley down to the Ningthi river, situated to the east of the old boundaries, and peopled by Shans, was added to the State. … In 1834 the British Government decided to restore the Kubo valley to Burma, the government of which had never ceased to remonstrate against its separation from that country. The alley was given back, and a new boundary laid down by an agreement dated January 9, 1834. The British Government at the same time bound itself to pay to the Raja of Manipur an annual allowance of Rs. 6,370 in compensation for the loss of the Kubo valley« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER, India 1906-1909, 17: 186-187).
