An unspecified number of unspecified caves (note 1), possibly of natural origin and probably modified by man, are situated above the right (northern) bank of the Tage Chu (PRANAVANANDA 1939: 133), one of the streams flowing from the east-southeast into lake Manasarovar. SITUATION 1939: About 3 or 4 miles [4.8 or 6.4 km] from the shore of Manasarowar, upon the left [west-southwest] bank of the Tage Chu, there are several hot springs at Tagpotong [note 2] … Opposite of these springs on the right [east-northeast] bank of the Tage are some caves called Chuphuk … (PRANAVANANDA 1939: 127 map, 133 text). SITUATION 1949: About 3 or 4 miles [4.8 or 6.4 km] from the shores of the Manas, situated on the left bank of the Tag tsangpo, there are several hot springs at Nyomba-chhuten [note 3] … Opposite these springs on the right bank of the Tag are some caves called Chhu-phuk … [note 4] (PRANAVANANDA 1949: 47-48). SITUATION 1957: HUMMEL (1957: 626) refers to PRANAVANANDA (1949: 49) and places Chu-Puk not far from the eastern shore of lake Manasarovar. CULTURAL HISTORY - human use: … Chuphuk, where a few monks live in winter. There are a few chortens and mani-walls. Just near the caves there are the foundations of a ruined monastery. Some shepards from Nonokur camp here in early spring and autumn for a couple of months in each season (PRANAVANANDA 1939: 133). … Chhu-phuk, where a few monks live in winter. Just near the caves there are come chhortens and mani-walls and the foundation of an old ruined monastery, said to be of Guru Padmasambhava and pulled down by Zorowar Singh.
