Description
A doline containing an unexpectedly vertical shaft (Ende 2007.02.17 Mss) or the relic of a cave, which, currently in ruins, was considered to represent a blind old cave fragment (Whitaker 2008.02.22 untitled Mss: Lumthari Remnant Cave). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi -ka krem- translates into a cave (SINGH, N 1906: 46) but the Synteng -ka thloo- or -ka thlu- –corresponding to the Khasi -ka thliew- (in short: ka 'liew)– is a hole, a pit, a depression (SINGH, N 1906: 227) and probably a better fitting appelation for a doline. The Khasi noun -ka tasàm- signifies a worn-out and useless tool or wares (SINGH, N 1906: 221). The doline name -krem makyshimen- gathered by Ende (2007.02.17 Mss) appears to translate into one Up To You [named] Cave as the prefix -ma- is used with the personal pronoun to emphasize it (SINGH, N 1906: 126), the strange ky appears to stand for the plural article -ki- or they (SINGH, N 1906: 41), the prefix -shi- means one (SINGH, N 1906: 193), and the phrase -me'n- is an abreviation of -me yn- and means thou wilt (SINGH, N 1906: 181). Whitaker (2008.02.22 untitled Mss) recorded his blind old cave fragment within the doline again without name. Brooks (anonymous Mss amendment to Whitaker 2008.02.22 untitled Mss) nicknamed Whitaker's relic cave inside the doline Lumthari Remnant Cave as if a remnant of the village of Lumthari (note 1) is found here. SITUATION 1: Ende (2007.02.17 Mss) suggests to reach the doline possibly containing a From Lumthari head north on the main road [note 2] and fork off [note 3] on a large track that bears right [without orientation]. Walk through the open pines [spring 2007]. There is a doline [without identified dimensions and shape] on the right [without orientation] with banana trees [spring 2007]. The shaft that may be of interest [and] lies in the west (south-west) end of the doline. SITUATION 2: Whitaker (2008.02.22 untitled Mss: Lumthari Remnant Cave) places the item at an estimated (travelling?) distance of circa 800 mnorth of Lumthari and under a small cliff in a subsidiary depression to a large elongate depression. SITUATION 3: Brooks (anonymous Mss amendment to Whitaker 2008.02.22 untitled Mss) advices to prectise applied clearvoyance to see separate sheet. SITUATION 4: According to the recorded GPS positions, the blind old cave fragment (Whitaker 2008.02.22) inside the doline lies at a linear distance of 560 m approximately NNE from the northern end of the village of Lumthari (note 4) and about 45 m in a direct line approximately WSW (-18.6 m north and -39.2 m east) but 54 m vertically lower down from where Ende (2007.02.17 Mss) took ––probably near an north-eastern edge of the doline–– her Krem Makyshimen GPS position. With depth the shaft angles over to the doline. CAVE DESCRIPTION 2 (Whitaker 2008.02.22 untitled Mss -Lumthari Remnant Cave- with sketch of the cave): Except blind old cave fragment none. Bibliography 06/01/2018Histoire
EXPLORATION HISTORY: 2007.02.17: Novell Bareh of Lumthari village guided Brian D. Kharpran Daly, Barbara Anne am Ende (2007.02.17 Mss: Krem Makyshimen) and Peter Glanvill to a Krem Makyshimen. According to Brooks, S J et al. (2007.03.01 Mss: Diary2007.doc), Barbara, Pete G and Brian KD visited two deep shafts [Krem Makyshimen and Krem Wah Diar], and GPSed positions. 2008.02.22: Terence 'Terry' M. Whitaker (2008.02.22 untitled Mss: Lumthari Remnant Cave) and Philippa Glanvill re-visited the site and drafted a sketch of the doline (note 5).
