Description
The Chaitya (WEST 1861a: 3 item 4) is a man-made rock chamber (-cave- temple) containing inscriptions (WEST 1861a: 3 items 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10; WEST 1861a: 13 item 59) and yielding another inscription on a squared stone 19.5 inches by 10.25 inches [49.5 by 26 cm], found lying on the outside terrace, under the trees, in front of the chaitya cave (No. 3), and since in the possesion of Dr. Wilson. As this may have been built up with similar stones, it would be rash to read these three lines consecutively (WEST 1861a: 11 item 48) in addition to an inscription of two lines on the face of a similar, but smaller, squared stone, found near the same place as the last … (WEST 1861a: 11 item 49). CAVE LIFE: BROSSET (1962a: 11 table) reports a colony (varying from 2 to 50 or 80 individuals) of the Fulveous fruit bats (Chiroptera: Megachiroptera: Pteropidae: Rousettus leschenaulti Desmarest 1820) at Kanheri Cave No. 3 … Ancient Buddhist cave carved in rock, in a forested area of Salsette Island.
