Getting to Matheran [note 1] is half the fun; from Neral Junction [note 2] you take a narrow-gauge toy train up the 21 km route to the heart of the hill station. It's a two hour ascent (or 90 minute descent) as the train winds its way around the steep slopes and, at one point, passes through 'one kiss tunnel' (LONELY PLANET, India 1997: 836).
