Description
An unspecified, locally known »Krem Mawksiar« (Kharpran Daly 1997 Mss, item no. 12), which is, perhaps, called after a nearby village of Mawksiar (not identified), is said to be situated somewhere across the »Wah Kynshi« (Um Kynshi) or Kynshiang / Kynchiang River (note 1) and in the vicinity of »Nongkyllam« or Nongkhyllam (note 2). ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi "maw ksiar" translates as »golden stone« (SINGH, N 1906: 49, 130).
NOTE 1: »The Kynshiang rises near Mairang [±1 km N25°33'40”: E091°38'40” WGS84] in the north and is known in its upper parts as the Um Kynshi. It pursues a south-westerly course till it enters the area under description near Mawrongor. It then turns westward, following an abruptly zig-zag course till, in the centre of the Nongstoin territory, it turn south and sweeps in a broken semicircular curve to the plains« (PALMER 1924: 144). The India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006) map 45 G3 shows one »Kynchiang« river. NOTE 2: »Nongkyllam« (Kharpran Daly 1997 Mss item no. 3) is the village of Nongkhyllam (N25°14'40”: E091°08'30” WGS84 Survey of India Half-Inch series sheet 78-O/SW edition 1917) that lies 9 or 10 km along the road east of Kulang (also: Nongkulang N25°14'55”: E091°04'05” WGS84).
