Description
The -Elephant Cave- is a man-made cave temple (man-made, rock-cut chamber used for religious purposes), which contains an inscription (note 1) that drew much attention (note 2), and is situated somewhere on (the hill) Udayagiri. CAVE DESCRIPTION 1990: Hathi Gumpha or Elephant Cave (cave 14) is plain but an inscription relates in 117 lines the exploits of its builder, King Khargaveli of Kalinga, who ruled from 168 to 153 BC (LONELY PLANET, India 1990: 596; 1993: 502; 1997: 540; 2001: 490).
