Location
-- Tham Khan can easily be reached by foot from Ngoy Nua village. Just follow the footpath upstream the Nam Ngoy creek from the south end of the village. A visitors fee is collected at the beginning of the footpath. After about 30 minutes walking into the Nam Ngoy Valley the path crosses a stream that emerges from a cave. This is the lower entrance of Tham Khan. To the left a footpath ascends to the upper (dry) entrance of the cave [5158] Map sheet: F48-110 Methode: GPS
Description
DREYBRODT JOERG informations
History:-- In der feuchten, abschüssigen Höhle haben Bewohner Muang Ngoi Neuas während des zweiten Indochinakrieges sieben Jahre lang vor den Bomben Schutz gesucht. Die Ältesten berichten, wie sie ihre Felder davor nur Nachts bestellen konnten [4983] >>>exploration history: Explo history: -- 22.-24.11.2000 explored and surveyed to 520 m by Amis Laos Expedition 2000 (NL) -- 14.03.2003 visited by H. Steiner Cave description: Citation: Analysis: [5158]: The lower entrance to Tham Khan is a scenic resurgence but ends in a sump after a short distance. The upper entrance leads into a chamber of about 15 m by 30 m. On the right side of the chamber the cave river flows at a lower level towards a sump that connects to the lower entrance. On the left side extensive mud banks almost reach the ceiling of the chamber. The sizeable entrance gallery can be followed for about 180 m with the cave river rushing on the right side on a lower level. The fossil passage is filled with large boulders and calcite formations. Towards the end of the dry gallery the river can be reached two different ways down to the right, the first of which requires a rope. The cave river sumps downstream but can be followed upstream for about 60 m in a nicely decorated gallery. The stream passage soon turns to the right where the water emerges from a sump that almost certainly connects to Tham Pageo. This sump was free-dived for about 10 meters and two air-filled chambers were reached. However, no connection to Tham Pageo was made >> survey >> shown in map [8525]: only fauna records [5128]: >> survey >> shown in map [5458]: >> shown in map [5513]: >> shown in map [10281]: fauna record Equipment: -- Towards the end of the dry gallery the river can be reached two different ways down to the right, the first of which requires a rope. UXO Laos (the regional explosives clearance project) has removed explosives from the cave.
