Description
»An irregularly shaped cell, six feet [1.8 m] long by four feet [1.2 m] broad, which is approached by a flight of steps on each side« lies »close by« and above one »perennial spring called Tura« (DRAKE BROCKMANN 1911: 320). ETYMOLOGY: The »Adh« (Adh Nadi, Adh Nuddee, Adhwa Nadi) is a stream / river in the area (note 1) and »sar« (in Urdu, Farsi etc.) means head, or spring. SITUATION: At estimated travelling distances of 125 km (±25 km) from Varanasi (Benares N25°20': E83°00') and 50 km from Mirzapur (25°09'N: 82°35'E) generally south-west, and about 22 km in a direct line due south from Haliya, Halia, or Hallia (note 2), the Adesar Hill (DRAKE BROCKMANN 1911) or Adhesar pahar (note 3) rises some 250 m above the northern bank of the Son River, about 10 km north-west from where the Gopad River (N24°33': E82°27') joins the Son River from the south-west. DRAKE BROCKMANN (1911: 320) places the »irregularly shaped cell« and »spring called Tura … not far from Dibhor [note 4], on the east of the road« and a little later »near the top of the hill, 2 1/2 miles [4.025 km] north-east of Dibhor.« CAVE DESCRIPTION 1911: »It is said that there are several caves in the preciptitous sandstone cliff near the top of the hill, but these have not been explored [note 5]. A perennial spring called Tura comes out of the rock near the top of the hill … and close by is an irregularly shaped cell, six feet [1.8 m] long by four feet [1.2 m] broad, which is approached by a flight of steps on each side. The spring flows out from beneath the cave, and its course is marked by a green track right down to the foot of the hill; while near the cell are several fine old trees« (DRAKE BROCKMANN 1911: 320). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1969: »Cockburn (1883, 1884) reports that the Kaimur Hills are sand- stones; caves are uncommon but rock shelters abound … Drake-Brockman (1911) confirms that the caves are merely rock shelters and records them near Ashtbhuja (82° 30?, 25° 10?), Bhuili (83° 03?, 25° 060 and Dibhor (82° 18', 24° 42')« (CRAVEN, S A 1969: 20).
NOTE 1: The river Adh (Adh Nadi, Adh Nuddee, Adhwa Nadi) joins near N24°55': E82°17' the Son River. NOTE 2: Halia (DRAKE BROCKMAN 1911: 320) or Haliya on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 57 E1) and on the Survey of India sheet 63-L Sihawal (1984 edition) near N24°49'35”: E82°19'35” (Everest 1830), the Halia and Hallia at N24°49': E82°20' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003).NOTE 3: A prominent, isolated and anonymous peak 474 near N24°37'30”: E82°19'00” (Everest 1830): 474 m asl is shown on Survey of India sheet 63-L Sihawal (1984 edition) west of one village of Adhesar N24°37'25”: E82°20'30” (Everest 1830) in Chunar district, 22 km in a direct line due south of Haliya (Halia, Hallia). NOTE 4: DRAKE BROCKMANN (1911: 320): »Dibhor, Tappa Uppraudi, Tahsil Mirzapur: Dibhor lies in 24°42'N. and 82°18'E., nine miles [14.5 km] south of Halia, on the road which leads from the latter place to Bhopari in Rewah. It is situated at the foot of the Kaimur range and gives its name to the ghat or pass by which the road ascends the hills; and there is a pathway through a gap in the hills to the east which joins the road running southwards to Bardi. The village is now but a small hamlet of a few houses and contained in 1901 a population of but 41 souls … There is a small temple … a fine tank, 430 feet [131 m] in length from north to south and 352 feet [107 m] in breadth from east to west, with steps all round.« NOTE 5: Dr. Stephen A. Craven (1991.02.26 personal correspondence) told me that the 1935 supplement to vol. 27 D (appendix, page XXXIX) of the District Gazetteer of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh: Mirzapur mentions several caves near the top of »Adesar« (Adhesar) but I have not seen this supplement.
