Description
An exposed cave entrance (3 m wide and 1.7 m high) leads to a solitary and distorted elongated room (up to 3 m wide, 1.8 m high and 7 m long) with two low leads to SSW which soon become too small to be penetrated. Except for the dry sand covering the floor, the cave is empty and offers a nice viewpoint to watch the village life below. The cave gives the impression of being an abandoned (relic) resurgence with its water rising nowadays from springs below. ETYMOLOGY: The Garo cave name "Tetengkol" means »House / Home / Cave of the Teteng« (type of a dwarf Leprachaun) and obviously hints at a legend. SITUATION: More or less south of Tura City on the road to the Orchid Lodge (note 1) and below a huge telecommunications tower, there is a small road off to approximately the east. About 100 to 150 m from the road junction, a flight of steps skews down into a glen with a settlement of wooden houses at the base of an approximately 20 m high sandstone cliff exposing fluvially sedimented and crossbedded rock with occasional pebble beds and a few clay strata (note 2). Up in the cliff, at anestimated 10 or 12 m above the ground, a narrow shelf covered with loose sand and dry leaves follows the contour to the cave entrance in the cliff face.
NOTE 1: In Tura tow, the Orchid Lodge N25°30'51.7”: E90°11'32.4” (±7.4 m averaged, WGS84, 2002.02.05 HDG) is the former Circuit House in the Tetengkol area of the suburb New Tura. NOTE 2: Palaeocene to Lower Eocene Tura formation (RAJA RAO 1981) or Eocene (Sylhet Stage) Tura Sandstones (EVANS 1964: 12-13).
