Description
A group of four Brahmanical rock-cut caves of the Gupta period. One of the caves bears an inscription of four lines in Brahmi script which is engraved on the left side of the doorway (Indian Archaeology: A Review [IAR] 1981-82 / 1984: 98). ETYMOLOGY: The noun -dhunge- is in all the Pahari languages the word for a rock, a mass of solid mineral material projecting above the earth's surface. SITUATION: Punjab, District Gurdaspur, Doonge, Tahsil Pathankot [note 1] (IAR 1981-82 / 1984: 98). A place called Dhangu Sefa (±5 km 32°22'30”N: 75°46'E) at the base of the Siwalik Range lies at a location, which is ideal for religious industry, where the road (AMS sheet NI43-15 Pathankot (U502 series, 1959 edition), which runs from the National Hghway NH20 off to the north (India Road Atlas, Eicher Goodearth 2006: 2 C5) commences to climb via Dhar / Dhar Khurd (note 2) to Dalhousie (32°32'N: 75°59'E) in Himachal Pradesh.A group of four Brahmanical rock-cut caves of the Gupta period.
