Description

Gebauer, Adriano Germano, Rosario Ruggieri and Giancarlo Zaccaria (BCRA-Grade 4b). Length: 188 m. Vertical range: -9.5 m. The cave is identical with „Caverna Cheringoma no. 5“ (Vachamuteco 1982). Ninga Manguenje is situated about 2,9 km NE of Mazamba villages and can be reached by following a winding shallow riverbed across the plateau. The riverbed features outcrops of flaggy horizontally bedded Cheringoma limestone and sometimes some wide and flat karren. For a distance of 10 m the riverbed even uses a subsurface tunnel. It sinks finally in a place where two faults cross each other. The nearby cave entrance is a sinkhole leading down to a sizeable passage (3 x 3 m) some 5 m below the surface. The gallery runs for 35 m to a crossing of 3 joints resulting in a , starshaped" ground plan. The joint controlled walkable galleries end after short distances (less than 40 m) in impenetrable small vertical rifts. Calcite deposits are absent. The cave, today functioning as a minor sink, is suspected to have developed as a resurgence. Relicts of a 1m-gauge railway line witness intensive guano exploitation supposedly during the end of the fifties. The guano deposit was completely exploited. A small number (less than 100) of two different bat species was observed during the survey. Recent bones were observed, including the skull of a wild pig.

ossil cave in the Eocene nummulitic limestones of the Cheringoma formation, consisting of wide galleries with bell shape, on fractures N 65° and N 160°. Two levels of notches of erosion are visible on the walls of the conduits and big pockets on the ceiling caused by the intersection of fractures are visible, too. Some fractures are filled with detritical calcareous material. Fig. 25 shows the following structures: 1) N 65° - direction of great karstification with 38,8 %; - 2) N 160° and N 120° - secondary directions of karstification with 32,1% and 29,1%.
