Description
In the immediate south of Diu Circuit House on Jallandar Beach is a man-made flat terrace (a former limestone quarry?) on a small cape. The southern, sea-ward flank of this terrace is bordered by a wall of grown rock which is pierced at an elevation of about 7 m above the sea level by a somewhat rectangular hole (in profile 1.8 to 4 m wide and 1.5 to 1.8 m high) with a floor, in ground plan of diamond shape (1.5 to 4 by 3 m). About 10 m further along the same wall is another gap at the same level, this time however without roof. Both cavities might represent cannon holes. No obvious traces of human workmanship are visible but the miliolite limestone is weathering at a rate that makes mortar of less than 500 years old masonry walls protrude by several centimetress. ETYMOLOGY: The Sanskrit noun "dar" is said to designate »cave« (note 1).
