Description

The about 10 m by 15 m (on 020 - 200 degrees) wide closed depression (collapse doline), which formed when the caprock of Lakadong Sandstone caved in and broke into the underlaying Lakadong Limestone, descends 15 m down to a daylight-lit pool of water. ETYMOLOGY: The origin, history or herstory and meaning of the Synteng Khasi (Pnar) cave name "Krem Umtyongai" (Spindro Dkhar, Lumshnong, 1997 personal communication) has not been identified but seems to refer to a Water Bestowing Cave (note 1). SITUATION: In the backyard of what had been, at least in the years 1995, 1996 and 1999 Spindro Dkhar's house in the centre of Lumshnong village. CAVE DESCRIPTION: At the level of the water, an about 9 m wide and 3 m high "mouth" or "gate" faces south-west and intersects the underground "Virgin River" (as dubbed by foreign cavers) or "Um 'Thei Sotti" (the same but khasified) flowing along the active mastercave passage in Krem –>Kotsati. The upstream branch leads north to the "Village Well" (Krem Kotsati, Entrance 1) and downstream is blocked after several hundred metres by an impenetrable boulder choke. A labyrinthine series of low, vadose crawls (at water level) on the eastern (orographically left) side eventually connects to Krem –>Umshor via walking sized river passage, which runs into a boulder choke and a well washed, scalloped tube on the right, which bypasses this choke and continues to the lower reaches of Krem Kotsati.
