Description
A solitary window and a small balcony high up in a vertical rock wall (conglomerate?) indicate a Tibetan Buddhist -cave- monastery (a branch of Likir Gompa). SITUATION: At Gel (Gyal) in the Wakha Chu (Wakha Valley). APPROACH: Upon arriving from Shergol (N34°24': E076°18') beyond the village of Wakha (east of Mulbekh), the Srinagar - Leh road passes the new Tibetan Buddhist monastery Tashigang Gompa. Before leaving the valley for Namika La (3723 m asl), a badly motorable 3 km track off to the right-hand side leads up to the village of Gel (HIRSCHBERG 1977, 1980, 1987: 97), which is marked Gyal near N34°22': E076°24' on AMS sheet Kargil (NH43-07, U502 Series, 1963 edition).
