Description
»Some caves and overhanging rocks« (HERBERT 1825: 344, 346) were »capable of affording shelter to our followers« near the tree-line limiting »stunted creepers of the Rhododendron genus« at the head of the Rupin (note 1). HERBERT (1825: 406) positioned (disputable: Latitude 31°19'37", alpha Aquilae, alpha Cygni) the cave and the head of the Rupin, which appears to correspond to the Rupin River (a tributary from the north to the Tons) that rises near N31°20': E078°10' (AMS sheet NH44-01 Chini,1963 edition) and is positioned under the titles Rupin Gad and Rupin River (mouth at N31°04': E078°07') online: nima.mil/geonames/India (accessed 16.11.2003). HERBERT (1825, folded map) indicates »Wodar« between the passes »Jako« (note 2) and »Gunas« (note 3).
NOTE 1: HERBERT (1825) positioned his »Jako« at N31°15'45": E078°05' (disputable) but nima.mil/geonames (accessed 16.11.2003) lists a hill called Jakhu or Jakku at N31°06': E077°11' (WGS84). NOTE 2: HERBERT (1825) positioned »Gunas Pass« at Lat. 31°22' Long. 78'09' (disputable).
