Description
A glacier cave (in ice) or »cavern in which the Rungnu takes its rise« reports WHITE (1909 edited 1971, 1983, 1984: 58) from an ice cliff at an elevation of »12,100 feet« (3688 m) at the snout of the »Kangchen glacier« (note 1) which »… ends in an ice cliff, from a cavern in which the Rungnu takes its rise …« APPROACH: Having left Kabru (N27°37': E088°07'), Jean-Claude WHITE (1909 edited 1984: 57-58) and his »coolies [porters] … kept to the centre of the glacier, which we found quite smooth and very good going, quite unlike most of the other glaciers I have been over, either those on the south of the Giucha-la [note 2], which are complete cut up, have enormous holes in them, and over which it would be quite impossible to march; the Zemu glacier [note 3], which is much the same, or the glaciers in the extreme north of the Lonak Valley [note 4], which again appear more like a rough sea suddenly frozen into enormous hummocks of ice.«
NOTE 1: »Kangchen glacier« (WHITE 1909 edited 1984: 57-58) is shown as »Kanchenjunga Glacier« (snout near N27°45': E088°01') on AMS sheet NG45-03 Kanchenjunga (U502 series, 1963 edition). NOTE 2: »Giucha-la« (WHITE 1909 edited 1984: 57-58) is the Goeche La N27°37'30”: E088°12': 4940 m asl. NOTE 3: Zemu glacier N27°46': E088°25': 4200 m asl. NOTE 4: »Lonak Valley« (WHITE 1909 edited 1984: 57-58) or Lhonak N27°47': E088°02'.
