Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 17/04/2016

NOTE 1: »Malanguinim« (GOUDELLER et alii 1994) is perhaps the same as »Malangini« (goacentral.com/Goamonuments/caves_in_goa.htm accessed 2002.11.24). NOTE 2: A travelling distance of 14 km along the road approximately south of Margao (N15°18': E073°57') leads to the area just north of Cuncolim (N15°10': E073°59' nima.mil/geonames, accessed 16.11.2003) where, however, no place called Malanguinem, Malangini (or so) is shown on the scale 1: 250,00 AMS sheet ND43-02 Belgaum (U502 series, 1960 edition), only one »Mulem« (for: Malan?) at N15°14': E074°01'.

An allegedly natural cave (unidentified dimensions) is said to exist in the (Holocene) laterite in the vicinity of Malanguinim (note 1), a village that lies 14 km (probably along the road) from Margao approximately south (note 2). The entrance is about 80 m above the level of the road and leads to a 2 m high passage of unknown length. ARCHAEOLOGY: GOUDELLER et alii (1994) investigated not only the surface in front of the cave but also excavated a trial pit (0.5 by 0.6 m wide, 0.2 m deep) inside the cave, which yielded pottery, microliths and »faunal remains.« The relative »antiquity« (age) of »animal bones« was dated with fluorine / phosphate ratio method to late Mid-Holocene or 4000 to 3000 BC (before current).
