Description
Various descriptions
Man-made rock chambers (perhaps including a few modified natural caves), which had been excavated from conglomerate (note 1), reported MASSON (in WILSON 1841: 101): All the sepulchral monuments [topes, stupas] of Chahar Bag [note 2] have their caves, and the scarped sides of the several ravines afforded convenient sites for their excavation. Some of these are spacious, but devoid of ornament, and the entrances of many of them are formed after the manner of Egyptian caves. SIMPSON (1881:194, 200): On the south… are a range of heights under which the present Kabul road now passes westward. Along this, for a distance of six or seven miles [9.6 or 11.4 km, between Ahin Posh Tope a mile south of Jalalabad westward to Sultanpur], there is an almost continuous line of remains: There are caves in the rocks, and the mounds of topes and viharas on the ground above them… The rock is conglomerate in these heights and the cliffs are full of caves, but all in a very decayed condition.Man-made rock chambers (perhaps including a few modified natural caves), which had been excavated from conglomerate (note 1), reported MASSON (in WILSON 1841: 101)
