Description

Herbert Daniel Gebauer - 02/07/2016

An up to 3 m wide and 10 m long hole (aligned NW-SE) breaches the Lakadong Sandstone, which exhibits here a vertical thrust of 2 m or 3 m, and intersects in the underlaying Lakadong Limestone the cave passage of the Virgin River (12 m to 15 m below the surface) in the Krem Umlawan section of Krem Kotsati. ETYMOLOGY: No autochthonous, indigenous or locally known cave name has been identified for what was dubbed »Umlawan Rift Pot« (Gebauer H D 1996.03.09) because it is not only one of the cave entrances of Krem Umlawan but also displays the peculiar shape and character of a rift pot. At an advanced stage of expeditious caving, Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt had interpreted an unidentified person (no name mentioned) as having pointed out that this vertical cave entrance is locally known as "Thloo Kharasniang" or Pig-sized Hole (literally: hole of the same good size as a pig). This interpretation is suspected to result from a communication error. Compare: Krem –>Kharasniang, Lumshnong, etymology. CULTURAL HISTORY -- novel (fictitious prose narrative representing character and action with some degree of realism): »And just there you can see one of the vertical entrance [sic!] of the Kotsati-Umlawan system, where the debris is being dumped, filling up the cave and choking the water outlets, thereby creating backwaters filling up the passages to almost near the entrance« (KHARPRAN DALY, B D 2014: 175).
