Description
A »funnel shaped hollow formed on the side of a small knoll« gives access to »the entrance of a cave formed by the falling in of the underlying limestone« (LATOUCHE, T H D 1890: 15). IDENTITY: »Cave (6) Coal 2'6"« (cave, 6th site, coal 75 cm thick) indicated on the »Plan of the Umlotodo Plateau« (note 1). SITUATION: On the »plateau, called Umlotodo, on which the village of Lakadong stands« (LATOUCHE, T H D 1890: 14) and about 250 m in a direct line SSW from the »Village of Lakadog [sic!]« (Plan of the Umlotodo Plateau) or Lakadong. CULTURAL HISTORY - human use coal mine: »(6) … the coal is found at the entrance of a cave formed by the falling in of the underlying limestone. The coal is 2 feet 6 inches [0.75 m] in thickness, but dies out to nothing within a distance of 12 feet [3.7 m]; it appears again a few feet further on, where it is only 1 foot [0.3 m] thick. This thinning out of the coal is noticeable in most of the sections seen … I think … that the coal only occurs in lenticular beds …« (LATOUCHE, T H D 1890: 15).
NOTE 1: »Plan of the Umlotodo Plateau, Lakadong Coal-Field, Jaintia Hills, Scale 400 ft = 1 Inch« (circa 1: 4800) »On transfer paper by Rahmatullah Khan« in LATOUCHE, T H D (1890).
