Description
A »swallow hole« (sinkhole, insurgence) reported the Conservator of Forests, Dhar State (1946.01.21 Mss) from a situation somewhere in »Nimanpur [town near N22°22'30”: E76°20'] … near the Eastern border of the Pargana about 4 furlongs [0.8 km] or so to the east of Khari river [note 1], on the common boundary line between Holkar Forest of Satwa [note 2]and Kaheri Reserve Forest of Chandgarh Range [note 3] of Khandwa District [note 4].« This »swallow hole« is possibly identical with the (whirlpool?) –>Bhimkund (Burhanpur / Khandwa).
NOTE 1: Khari river joins near N22°23': E76°26' the right (north) bank of the Narmada on AMS sheet NF43-07 Indore (U502 series, 1959 edition) and (without name) on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 70 B3). NOTE 2: »Satwa« is suspected to correspond to the village of »Satwas« on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 70 C2) and the »Holkar Forest of Satwa« seems to be the »Satwas State Forest« indicated near N22°29': E76°59' on AMS sheet NF43-07 Indore (U502 series, 1959 edition). NOTE 3: The Chandgarh Range is not identified unless it stands for hills above the town of Chandni (N21°26': E76°21' nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). Maximum and minimum height above mean sea level is 906 m and 180 m respectively. . The district, lying in Indore Division of Madhya Pradesh, is bounded on the east by the Betul and Hoshangabad District of Hoshangabad division, and Burhanpur District of Indore Division on south, on the west by West Nimar District of Indore division, and on the north by Dewas District of the Indore Division. Prior to the States reorganization, i.e., on 1st November 1956, the District was officially known as Nimar District and formed part of Mahakoshal region of the erst-while Madhya Pradesh. The western part of old Prant Nimar originally held by the Holkar, became a part of Madhya Bharat, when that state was formed in the year 1948. As on the reorganization of States, Madhya Bharat region was merged in Madhya Pradesh, the western part of old Prant Nimar eventually became a part if Madhya Pradesh. This tract with its headquarters at Khargone, also happened to retain its old name of Nimar, and being to the west of the District of former Nimar of Mahakoshal region, was named as Nimar (West) or West Nimar, while the District was officially renamed as Nimar (East) or East Nimar from 1st November, 1956. On 15th August 2003 the District has been divided into Khandwa & Burhanpur district.«
