Description
The Umpliang (Plate Stream) sinks in impenetrable, gravitationally dislocated limestone boulders in a shallow collapse doline at the base of the eastern wall surrounding the Jaintia Cement Works compound at Ladmyrsiang. ETYMOLOGY: The Khasi noun "ka pliang" is »a plate« (SINGH, N 1906: 161) and "u nàmpliang" means »an arrow with a spear head, generally used in warfare and hunting« (SINGH, N 1906: 138).
Histoire
EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1999.02.22: Alfred Lanong (Lumshnong) told Brian D. Kharpran Daly of a cave that takes a lot of water at a place called »Umpliang« (Krem Umpliang lies at a linear distance of 21 km approximately north-east of Lumshnong). 1999.03.31: H. D. Gebauer, guided by Larsing Sukhlain, took a GPS reading of the entrance, assisted by Nick Cain, Gregory D. Diengdoh, Paul Edmunds, Katharina "Kate" Janossy, Sophie Kumar, Robert Lamb, Louise Le Fluffy, Eleanor Lock, Earl Francis Lyngdoh, Helen Philp, Matthew Truman, Oliver Truman and Andrew "Andy" Peter Tyler. 2001.02.23: H. D. Gebauer and Anthony 'Tony' R Jarratt in company with Larsing Sukhlain and Neil Sootinck tried in vain to penetrate.
