LEAKEY's HOLE (Waltham 1971)
34.283300,75.483300
Description
An unlikely snow cave version of Leakey's Hole wanted Anthony 'Tony' C. Waltham (note 1) to have found on the approach of Zoji La [note 2], the pass (3530 m) between the upper reaches of the Sindh Valley in North Kashmir district and Kargil in Ladakh: »Later Tony reached the Zoji La and was able to locate and photograph a spectacular snow cave which is very likely the "hole" described by R. D. Leakey after he visited the area during the war« (Anthony 'Tony' C Waltham in: WALTHAM, Jane M 1971a: 9). BROOKS (note 3) suggests glacier caves in snow or ice »darkened by« (covered by a blanket of ablational) glacier debris may be confused for caves in rock.
NOTE 1: Expedition log (WALTHAM, Jane M. 1971a: 9) of the British Karst Research Expedition to the Himalaya 1970. NOTE 2: Zoji La Pass N34°17': E75°29' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). NOTE 3: BROOKS (1993c: Speleology of the Karakorum, Northern Pakistan.- Derbyshire: Orpheus Caving Club, page 3), literally repeated in BROOKS (1994c: Observations on the karst and caves of the Karakorum, Pakistan.- Swindon, International Caver 11: 13), opines »… these 'cave sightings' may in fact be ice caves [sic! not caves containing ice but glacier caves in ice] lying at the foot of glaciers or snow patches and this would not be the first time that ice darkened by glacier debris has been wrongly identified as limestone and ice caves [sic! for: glacier caves] confused for rock caves (e.g. Leakey 1960's).«
