DUMDONGLA L'HAPS

Description
Several dark and comparatively extensive caves in gneiss, which were said to give access to fabulous tunnels, observed the revenue surveyor Captain Walter Stanhope SHERWILL (1853: 612, map opposite page 540) when approaching on 19th August 1852 the »mountain Dumdongla [note 1]« on the »Singaleelah« or Singalila Ridge (note 2) on the Sikkim - Nepal border:
NOTE 1: »Dumdongla« (SHERWILL 1853) seems to be not a mountain but a Dumdong La or Dumdong Pass. NOTE 2: »Singaleelah« (SHERWILL 1853) is Singalila N27°14': E088°02' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 26 C3, C4). NOTE 3: This »footpath descending towards Nepal« is suspected to follow the north-western / right bank of the »Inwa Khola« (Central Service Map 1 to 125'000 sheet: 01 Taplejung, 1989 edition) or »Iwa Pokhar« (India Road Atlas, Eicher Goodearth 2006: 26 B3, B4, C3 and C4).
