Description
An unspecified cave called »Krem Mawjud« is said to be »located at Kyrdum (West Khasi Hills)« (Kharpran Daly, B D 1997.03.13 Mss: "Twenty-five caves located" item 8). ETYMOLOGY: SINGH, N (1906) lists no Khasi word "jud" as such but "jot" (adjective), »destroyed, ruined« (SINGH, N 1906: 105). SITUATION: In an unidentified spatial relation »near« a certain village of »Kyrdum, West Khasi Hills« (Kharpran Daly 1997 Mss) or, perhaps, somewhere in the vicinity of Kyrdem (note 1), headquarters of the Kyrdem G.S.C., Umsning C.D. Block, Ri Bhoi district. CAVE POTENTIAL: Also reported from apparently the same vicinity is not only Krem –>Ryngia at »Kyrdeng, north of Shillong« but also Krem –>Mawliehpoh, Kyrdem, and Krem –>Tirot, Niangdai.
NOTE 1: Kyrdem 25°42'N: 92°05'E (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) is said (Neil Sootinck after myntri Kharluhi, Umsning 2001.04.19 personal communication) to lie about 10 km east along the road from Umroi (±3.6 km 25°42'N: 91°58'E). Kyrdeng (Kharpran Daly, B D 1997 Mss item 3), however, is a populated place indicated near 25°40'N: 92°04'E on AMS sheet NH46-10 Shillong (U502 series, 1959 edition) and about 5 km or 6 km in a direct line south-west from Kyrdem (25°42'N: 92°05'E). kyrdem (Khasi, verb) to stamp with the foot (SINGH, N 1906: 60) ka kyrdan (Khasi, noun), a step, a degree, a shelf (SINGH, N 1906: 60).
