Description
What appears to be a rock shelter or the entrance to a natural cave is accidently shown in the background of a photograph of a stone head which LAHIRI et al. (1996: 51-52 figures 17, 18) consider a most significant and stunning black »ekamukhalingam« (literally: one-mouthed lingam) put up »just above the temple area, outside a cave, locally called Uddalaka rishi ka taposthana.« ETYMOLOGY: ”Uddalaka rishi ka taposthana“ translates as »Penance site of the Rishi from Uddala« where "Rishi" is the title of »any poet, philosopher, saint or sage; originally a sage whom the hymns of the Vedas were revealed« (LONELY PLANET, India 2005: 1111) and "Uddala" seems to be a place or country that I currently do not know how to identify. SITUATION: In the Dehli territory and about 30 km along the road south of the city of Delhi in Faridabad district (note 1), Ballabgarh tehsil (note 2): »Two kilometres west of Pali [note 3], on the road to Dhauj [note 4], a branch turns right towards the Mohabbatabad hills --from this branch road, before Gothra Mohabbatabad village [note 5], a dirt track leads towards the hills on the east-- a modern temple complex stands at the point where a drainage channel issues out of the hills« (LAHIRI, SINGH & UBEROI 1996).
NOTE 1: Faridabad N28°26': E077°19' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003).NOTE 2: Ballabgarh N28°21': E077°19' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). NOTE 3: Pali N28°22'30”: E077°10' (AMS sheet NH43-16 Delhi, 1963 edition) lies approximately 8 km or 10 km in a direct line north-west of Ballabgarh town. NOTE 4: Dhauj N28°21': E077°12' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003).NOTE 5: »Mohabbatabad village« (LAHIRI et al. 1996) is indicated as »Kotra Mohabbatabad« near N28°22'30”: E077°12' (AMS sheet NH43-16 Delhi, 1963 edition).
