Description
A man-made, south-west facing Jain 'cave temple' (rock-cut chamber used for religious purposes) lies about 8 km along the road north from Nasik / Nashik town (note 1) and about 150 m from the base of a hill (no name mentioned) rising about 200 m from the plain (WATSON 1864: 16, BLAVATSKY 1879-1882; IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909,18: 411-412). SITUATION: Somewhere at the village of Mashrul (note 2). DUTT (s.a. circa 2005: 37) places his »Chamber Caves of Mishrul« (sic!) and »Chambhar Cave« not only »near Mihsrul« (sic!) but also »near by the village of Mishsrul« (sic!) and concludes, a little considerably deranged, »since the Chamber cave [sic!] was built [sic!] in the 11th contury [sic!], this place is considered the sacred of Jains. Every year on Sunday in the month of December a fair (carnival) is organised over here.« It is when we come to DUTT, Manvesh (s.a. circa 2005: 41) that we find »Chamar Cave« (sic!) at a distance of »8 K.M.« from the »C.B.S.« (Nasik town Central Bus Stand).
NOTE 1: AMS sheet NF43-15 Dhaulia (U502 series, 19556 edition) shows at a distance of 8 or 10 km north of Nasik (N19°59': E073°48') hills rising from about 2000 feet (610 m asl) to a peak at 2846 feet (867 m asl). NOTE 2: »Mishrul, Mihsrul, Mishsrul« (DUTT, Manvesh s.a. circa 2005: 37) seems to correspond to the village of Mashrul shown near N20°02'30”: E73°48'30” on AMS sheet NF43-14 Dhulia (U502 series, 1956 edition) on the road from Nasik (N19°59': E073°48') a little east by north to Talegaon (N20°09': E073°49'), which is also shown in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 81 G3).
