Description

Two protruding rocks form what Archaeologists understood to represent »interconnected caves« but actually consist of a pair of adjacent rock shelters which contain rock art (paintings in red ochre, light pinkish red and dark red) interpreted as bison, both wild and domestic cattle, elephant and cock. Overlying with white pigment are hunting scenes with human figures carrying metal weapons and a female riding a lion. SITUATION (SAGAR 1984: 245-248, 252): »The way to Premshahi bifurcates near village Bachai on the National Highway [NH 26] leading from Narsinghpur [note 1] to Lakhnadaun [note 2]. From Bachai [note 3], one has to turn towards the east [west?] to cover a distance of 7 km up to Pitua nala. From Pitua nala he has to go towards the south through a forest road for a distance of 3 km, then towards the west for 9 km [note 4] to reach Bijauri-khalia [note 5] on the bank of river Machha [note 6]. After walking along the river bank for about 6 km, and crossing it, the rock shelters may be noticed at the low hill side in close proximity of the river bank in an unfrequented part of a dense forest range of the Satpura mountain« in the sense of a dense forest on the Satpura range.
