Description
A rock shelter (or a cave?) containing rock art (GUPTA, N P 1984: 204). ETYMOLOGY: "hathi" is the Hindi word for »elephant« and "daul" is possibly --but this is mere guesswork-- a version of "tol" or »school« (note 1). SITUATION: GUPTA (1984: 204) locates »Hathi Daul« somewhere above the banks of a Dhavari nala and near one village of »Rampur« which is said to lie »13 km north-west« (13 miles?) from the town of Panna (note 2) and thus within the area covered by the Panna National Park. CULTURAL HISTORY - rock art: GUPTA (1984: 204) saw earlier phase white colour paintings of soldiers in rows superimposed by red coloured paintings of soldiers and riders on horses with abormal long necks reminding of giraffe, and some conventional paintings of humped bull and sambhar (note 3) in red.
NOTE 1: There is a –>Hathi Tol near one »Jarat« (or so) in Raisen district. NOTE 2: The location of this »Rampur« (13 km north-west Panna is problematic insofar as »Rampura« (N24°41': E080°22'30”) lies about 20 km (about 13 miles) in a direct line due east of Panna (N24°43': E080°12'). NOTE 3: The Hindi "sambhar" (GUPTA 1984) or »sambar hind« (COCKBURN 1899: 95 plate 1 figure 3) and Urdu "jarau" is a kind of deer, zoologically Cervus unicolor (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 24: 152).
