Description

»The place is cool and, during noon, a picnic spot. The Hindus chant in chorus or alternatively and are accompanied by rural instruments or sitars while the meal is prepared. At the waterfall, three tufa caves are found. The most important, (1.5 by 3 by 6 m) is the temple proper (photo 6). A "great" stalagmite (50 cm) symbolises Krishna [sic! for: Shiva; the speleothem must be a lingam]. Each visitor, first having removed his shoes, strikes the bells hanging at the entrance. The rock surface is blackened with soot or stained with pigment used by the Hindus for bindi (colour dot between the eyes). Nearby, two other caves of 5 m in length serve dogs to sleep in the cool« (DUBOIS 1996: 9). Locally, phosphate rich black dolomite of the Late Proterozoic Aravalli supergroup is only superficially karstified with minor karren ("elephant skin") without developing caves. At Jamneshvar temple, however, calcite rich surface streams deposit travertine (calcareous tufa). SITUATION: Jhamneshnar temple (also: Jhamreshvar, Jhamareshvar, Jhamreshwar, Jhamareshwar) lies close to a certain »Jamukotra Phosphate Mine« (note 1), 20 km in a direct line south-east of Udaipur (N24°35': E73°41').

NOTE 1: »Jamukotra« (DUBOIS 1966) is indicated as Jhamar Kotra N24°28': E73°52' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NG43-14 Udaipur (U502 series, 1959 edition) but not in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 51 H2).
