Description
The second (southern) of two open crooms or hollows (OLDHAM, T 1859: 149). SITUATION: Indicated as Coal (g) (OLDHAM, T 1859 plate IX) and as Coal (9) (LATOUCHE 1890: plate XXIII) not only in the far south-western corner of the Umlatdoh (Survey of India Half Inch series sheet 83-C/SW, edition 1922) or Umlotodo Plateau (LATOUCHE 1890: plate XXIII) and South and West of the rising ground in the centre of the table-land (OLDHAM, T 1859: 149) or Low ridge of Limestone covered with thick jungle (LATOUCHE 1890: plate XXIII) but also about 750 m in a direct line approximately south-west from the village of Lakadong and 150 m in a direct line south of Coal (f) (OLDHAM, T 1859 plate IX) or southwest from Coal (10) (LATOUCHE 1890: plate XXIII). CROOM DESCRIPTION 1852: … two open crooms or hollows. … In the other (at g on plan), still to the South of this, a bed of coal is seen containing for about one hundred feet [30.5 m], not more than three feet [0.9 m] thick, in places not more than one [0.3m]. It is poor coal; the roof is of sandstone, yellowish, red in colour and ferrugineous. The floor of dark slaty shale, slightly micaceous, dipping slightly into the hill. The edge of the croom runs North 30° West, and, judging from the smoothed and scratched surface of the rocks, it appears to be formed by a break running in that direction (OLDHAM, T 1859: 149). RAVINE DESCRIPTION 1890: (9) The seam occurs about 12 feet [3.7 m] from the surface, but is not well exposed, as the rock above have fallen in upon it. It is said to have been about 3 feet [0.9 m] thick (LATOUCHE 1890: 16 site 9).
