Not only a »series of rock-cut caves« (rock-cut chambers used for religious purposes) but also »five cisterns« (perhaps in the open air, possibly underground) counts IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 12: 124) among the »antiquities« on Galna Fort (note 1). SITUATION: The fortified hill overlooking the village of Galna (N20°46': E74°32') lies just inside Nasik (Nashik) district but on the border to Dhule district, and may be reached either by travelling A) from Kasumbe, Kusumba, Kusumbe (note 2) some 25 km south towards Malegaon, or B) from Malegaon (note 3) about 30 km north towards Kasumbe (Kusumba, Kusumbe).

NOTE 1: »Galna Fort … is built on a circular detached hill, with fairly flat top affording an area of 20 or 30 acres [80,936 or 121,404 square metres]. The top is 2,316 feet [706 m] above mean sea-level, or about 800 feet [244 m] above the plain, and is accessible only by a broad flight of steps cut into the northern face … The view from Galna is magnificent« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 12: 124-125). NOTE 2: Kusumba or Kusumbe N20°55': E74°39' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) is shown as Kusumbe on AMS sheet NF43-14 Dhulia (U502 series, 1956 edition) at a travelling distance of 12 miles (19 or 20 km) west of Dhulia and as Kasumbe in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 82 A2) west of Dhule. NOTE 3: Malegaon N20°33': E74°32' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) is shown in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 82 A2) at a travelling distance of 105 km along the National Highway NH3 north-east from Nasik / Nashik (N19°59': E73°48').
