Description
One of the three legendary "caves" or inhabitable rock shelters at Mana (note 1). SITUATION: Following the Saraswati River upstream (north) from Badrinath (N30°44': E079°29'), first Ganesh Gufa, then –>Vyas Gufa and finally (beyond the Mana gorge) –>Muchukund Gufa are reached. LONELY PLANET, India (2005: 437; 2011: 429): »Just outside the village [of Mana] in a small cave is the tiny, 5000 years old Vyas temple, and nearby is Bhima's Rock …« Compare –>Bhimpul. CULTURAL HISTORY - religious folklore: The rishi Vyas is said to have composed the 220'000 verses of the Indian epic Mahabharat in this Vyas Gufa at Mana near Badrinath (note 2). Compare –>Vyas Gufa, Badrycazram. The foliated rock surface, which is visible above the cave entrance, called Vyas Pustaka or sometimes Vyas Gita, is thought to resemble a book. Ganesh, the scribe of Vyas, is said to have lived in the nearby –>Ganesh Gufa (KAUR, J 1985: 170; SHARMA, M M 1994: 94, 133; SHIPTON, E 1939: 189).
