Description
An unidentified cave (no name mentioned) was said to be locally known to exist in the Pomasan (Pomhasan) area.ETYMOLOGY: The Sohra Khasi "pomasan" or "pomhasan" and "pom ha san" may hint to »five cut [into pieces]« or to (something) »cut into five pieces« (note 1).SITUATION: In an unidentified location somewhere a) less than 1 km (approximately north) from the main entrance (insurgence) to the –>Mawmluh Cave, b) east of the road from Sohra (Cherra) to Mawmluh, and c) on the western flank of –> Lum Lawbah. APPROACH: The Cement Plant is said to be visible from where one has to leave the road for the entrance to this cave (Raphael Warjri 1998.03.19 personal communication).
NOTE 1: The Khasi verb "pom" (SINGH, N 1906: 162; BLAH, E 2007: 69) or ”pam” (SINGH, N 1920: 106) has been translated as »to cut (with a daw); to sever« (SINGH, N 1906: 162); »to cut« (BLAH, E 2007: 69). "ha" (Khasi, preposition) »in, to, into« (SINGH, N 1906: 79); »at« (SINGH, N 1920: 30); »in, into, at« (OLDHAM, T 1854 / 1984 appendix C: lxix). "ha" is used after words expressing existence or place, as »he is in the house« = "u don ha iing" (OLDHAM, T 1854 / 1984 appendix C: lxix). "ha" is also used impersonally, as: "ha diang" = »let me« (SINGH, N 1906: 79). "san" (Khasi, numeral) »five« (SINGH, N 1906: 183; GURDON, P R T 1906: 200, 208; OLDHAM, T 1854 / 1984 appendix C: LXII) and "ba san" »quinary« (BLAH, E 2007: 244) but "san" (Khasi, verb) »to grow up« (SINGH, N 1906: 183); »grow; wax« (SINGH, N 1920: 209, 586) and "ba san" (Khasi; adjective) »tall« (OLDHAM, T 1854 / 1984 appendix C: lxiii) or »lofty« (SINGH, N 1920: 296).
