Description
A rock art site with paintings in red ochre depicting a man of some position (with attendant holding an umbrella) riding a wheel-less bullock cart and some other figures (SILBERRAD, C A 1907, 2: 567, 570, figure 2). SITUATION: At a distance of »three quarters of a mile« (1.2 km) south-east of a certain village of »Gurhrampur« (note 2), which is said to lie at a travelling distance of about 16 miles (25.7 km on horse back) south of the Badausa railway station (note 3) on the »G.I.P. Railway« (Great Indian Peninsular, renamed Central Railway, Jhansi Manikpur Branch). Locally, the »ari« (note 1) is not precipitous and the drawing is found just below the top.
NOTE 1: »Gurhrampur« (SILBERRAD, C A 1907, 2: 567, 570) is not identified unless it corresponds to the village of Gjorelanpur or Ghoretanpur shown near N25°07'30”: E080°44' on AMS sheet NG44-10 Banda (U502 series, 1958 edition). NOTE 2: Badausa 25°14'52”N: 80°39'13”E (Everest 1830) on the Survey of India sheet 63-C/12 is positioned near 25°15'N: 80°39'E (WGS84 nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003). NOTE 3: SILBERRAD, C A (1907) applies the term "ari" to a vertical cliff face at the top of the scarp in the Vindhyan (range of hills). SINGH, R L (1971 / 1995: 619) considers the »… ascent from the plain to the plateau [in the Budelkhand region] is very sharp through an imposing scarp called ari.«
