BURFU GLACIER CAVE

An ice cave (sic! qua: glacier cave) draining Burphu Glacier (note 1): … The ice cave [sic! qua: glacier cave] retreat has been worked out at 150 m towards north from the ice cave position marked by Jangpangi. The average annual retreat has been found to be 4.84 m/year. However, if the ice cave retreat is measured from the snout front of 1966 to the snout front of 1997, in the direction of the retreat, the retreat works out to be 70 m, with an average of 2.26 m/year. This difference in the retreat values of ice cave and snout front can be attributed to the lateral shift in the position of the ice cave (SHUKLA & SIDDIQUI 1999: 163, 165, snout position map 1: 10'000, without bibliography). SITUATION: Due east of Nanda Devi the snout of Burphu Gal (Burphu Glacier) is shown near N30°22'30-: E080°15' on AMS sheet NH44-06 Nanda Devi (U502 series, 1958 edition) at the head of the Burphu Gad (Burphu stream), a tributary from the orographic left (east) which joins at the village of Burph (near N30°21': E080°10') the Goriganga (Gori Ganga) river about 10 km downstream of Milam (N30°26': E080°09'). APPROACH: Be prepared to digest how the trekking to the Milam glacier includes Ralam, Bogdyar, Mirtoli, Burfoo and various other known or unknown glaciers trekking too but the trekkers should be more strong, physically and mentally fit for these glaciers (Principal Dr. ARYA, Trilochan 1992: 108).
