Description

A dubious item, which consists of a sacred pool (a spring of water?) or a rock shelter (temple cave), which is dedicated to Shiva and called »Budha Amarnath« (Old Amarnath), reports GANHAR (s.a. = circa 1973: 44) from a place called »Makarkot« (note 1), which is said to lie at a distance of about 2 km (along the road?) from Ramban (note 2) on the National Highway NH 1A from Jammu to Srinagar and »by the side of a stream cascading down a ravine is a huge rock that caves in, leaving a kind of depression in its bossom. In it collects water dripping from the ever-green grass overhanging the rock. Some of the water drops on a few small lingams which have been placed in the pond of water.« Is this an occurrence of calcareous tufa?

NOTE 1: No place called »Makarkot« is listed on nima.mil/geonames (accessed 16.11.2003) or in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006 index) and IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 24: 342). The Sanskrit "makar" is the capricorn, and "kot" means castle. NOTE 2: Ramban N33°15': E75°15' (nima.mil/geonames accessed 16.11.2003) on AMS sheet NI43-11 Anantnag (U502 series, 1960 edition) is indicated as »Ramban« on the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 2 C4) in Doda district.
