Description
Two large boulders form sort of a "cave" where in the »earliest« ages of all the rishi (note 1) Gautama had his hermitage (note 2) on the relatively small island Gautama kshetra west of Shrirangapatnam (note 3), which is a lesser small island in the valley of the river Kaveri (Cauvery, Cavery, Kaubari), some 15 km north-east of Mysore city (12°18'26”N: 76°38'59”E). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1909: »Under two large boulders is the Rishi's cave, now closed up« (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER 1907-1909, 22: 179). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1928: »Seringapatam (richtig: Shrî - ranga - pattana), auf einer Insel in der Kâverî… gelegen. …Der Überlieferung zufolge soll hier der Rishi (Seher) Gautama den Vishnu verehrt haben; seine Höhle wird noch gezeigt« (GLASENAPP, H 1928: 73 forwarded by Manfred Moser, Regensburg 2011 personal correspondence).
