Description
General description
Explored in 1887 by the German traveller G.Rholf. Surveyed by CIRS in 2000 (Ruggieri 2001, plan and profiles). The low cave entrance opens in a shallow depression in the desert and leads to a large 40 m wide chamber. The cave has presumably Neolithic cave art as well as rich speleothems, which were dated by the "Heinrich-Barth-Institut für Archäologie und Geschichte Afrikas” (Cologne University). Another in-depth publication on dating of speleothems from Djara Cave was published by Brook et al. (2002). The latter article also provides a helpful list of references. Map according to Brook et al. (2002).
