Description
Rajasthan's most awesome baori (stepwell), with around 11 visible levels of zigzagging steps (LONELY PLANET, North India 2001: 686; LONELY PLANET, India 2003: 571; 2005: 158-159), is situated at Abhaneri, about 95 km along the National Highway 11 from Jaipur generally east towards Agra (N27°11': E078°01'). Flanking the baori is a small, crumbling palace where the royals used to picnic and bathe in private rooms (water was brought up by oxen), now inhabited by pigeons and bats (LONELY PLANET, India 2005: 158-159). SITUATION: To get there from Jaipur (N26°55': E075°49'), catch a bus (1.5 hours) to Sikandra (N26°57': E076°34'), from where you can hire a jeep for the 10 km round trip to Abhaneri (in 2002 IRs 20 but in 2004 250 IRs return, including a 30 minute stop). Alternatively take a bus to Gular, from where it's a 5 km walk to Abhaneri (Abaneri).
