NOTE 1: Nanda is the cowherd who raised the Hindu god Krishna, Vishnu's eighth incarnation. An unspecified, apparently sacred »cave« (PRANAVANANDA 1949: 171) or rock shelter (temple cave) is the winter abode of the goddess Nanda Devi (note 1). SITUATION: About »a mile before reaching the Pindari Glacier [note 2] … one of the most beautiful glaciers« (PRANAVANANDA 1949: 171). APPROACH: To reach the cave entrance, take a bus (5 hours) from Almora (N29°37': E079°40': 1650 m asl) via Kausani to Bageshwar (N29°51': E079°46': 975 m asl) and from there another bus (46 km, 1.5 hours) to Song (N30°15': E080°32': 1400 m asl) from where the Pindari Glacier is accessible by trekking (there and back again 94 km).
