Description
The so-called Simsang River Bank Caves (note 1) of BROOKS & SMART (1995: 39) represent not true caves but disconnected relics of a cave or two, which have attained an advanced (senile) state of cave development. SITUATION: BROOKS & SMART (1995: 39) place the Simsang River Bank Caves at a vague location on the west [orographically right] bank of the Simsang River and at an estimated walking distance of some 500 m downstream from Lower Siju village and thus close to the exurgence entrance of the Dobhakol at Siju (note 2) but without identified spatial relation to it. CAVE DESCRIPTION: A succession of short cave passages of approximately 3 x 3 m in cross section are divided by areas of roof collapse forming exists and entrances. These would appear to be the remnants of a much older cave without identified orientation and in an unknown spatial relation to the nearby Dobhakol at Siju. BROOKS & SMART (1995: 16) narrate not only of … one group checking out the banks of the Simsang river bothup and down stream, and visiting an interesting area on the east [orographically left] side of the river (compare –>Dajong Rongkol) but also how … along the river bank and beyond the river much evidence of wildlife and some cave remnants were found.up and down stream, and visiting an interesting area on the east [orographically left] side of the river (compare –>Dajong Rongkol) but also how … along the river bank and beyond the river much evidence of wildlife and some cave remnants were found.

EXPLORATION HISTORY: 1995 November / December: Lindsay B. Diengdoh and Kyrmen 'Hope' C Hiwot Passah, guided by an unidentified forest guide (no name mentioned), chartered a dug-out canoe to take Boycott, Antony 'Tony' and Jennifer 'Jenni' or 'Jenny' A. Brooks from Siju Arteka (one of the three lower Siju villages) to the opposite (left / east) bank of the Simsang River. Here, they visited some limestone outcrops and searched for enterable cave passages there. BROOKS & GEBAUER (1998: 15) confirm that … Tony, Jenni, Lindsay and Kaiman [Kyrmen 'Hope' C Hiwot Passah], accompanied by a forest guide, crossed the Simsang River to investigate the karst area to the east of Siju. In this area some spectacular karst scenery was found but no obvious caves.
