A pleasant rock shelter. ETYMOLOGY: According to Lalrinliana Royte, a local resident of Sihphir village, Ai Puk got it's name from a group of hunters who frequently took shelter there when hunting after a beautiful girl from the local village (Neil Sootinck 2001.08.29 personal correspondence). SITUATION: Somewhere near the village of Sihphir, which lies about 12 km north of Aizawl along the road (NH 54) to Kolasib and Silchar (in Assam). The cave entrance lies some 5 m below the road in a north facing cliff and extends inwards in the eastern part for 1.5 m and 4.9 m in the other end of the 6.7 m wide opening.

EXPLORATION HISTORY: The spot became famous in spring 2001 when the government developed sort of a tourist spot there. The site was duly fenced at a cost of seven lakhs (IRs 300,000) with a sturdy goat proof fence. By 'coincidence' adjacent farms of some Ministers were partly fenced as well (Vanlalruata 2001.04.23, personal communication). In late April 2001 'wild' posters brandishing the 'Ai Puk Scandal' were seen fading on walls in Aizawl city. 2001 summer: Neil Sootinck and Vanlalruata, guided by Lalrinliana Royte a local resident of Siphir village, visited, explored & surveyed.
