Description
A relatively »deep hole [which is] said extending all the way to the underworld« is situated within the temple premises of the Achaleshwar Mahandeva mandir, the Shiva temple at Achalgarh, which lies some 11 km along the road north of Mount Abu town (N24°35'20": E072°42'30"). ETYMOLOGY: achal, inconvincable; ghar, fortress; ishwar, Lord, God. CULTURAL HISTORY: »Achalgarh ¬ The Shiva temple of Achaleshwar Mahandeva … has a number of interesting features, including a toe of Shiva, a brass Nandi and, where the Shiva lingam would normally be, a deep hole said to extend all the way to the underworld« (note 1). »Acheleshwar Mahadev Tempel. ¬ Über 200 Treppenstufen muß man erklimmen zu einem kleinen Shiva Tempel. Legende: Als der Mount Abu kurz nach seiner Errichtung noch recht wackelig am Abgrund gestanden hat, soll ihm Shiva durch einen energischen Fußtritt in die heutige stabile Lage gebracht haben. Dabei verlor Shiva jedoch seinen großen Zeh und selbiger wird nun in Form eines Felsens am Tempel verehrt. Das sich unter dem Felsen-Zeh abzeichnende Loch, so wird einem versichert, soll bis zum Mittelpunkt der Erde führen« (BARKEMEIER 1997 edited 1999: 326).
