Description
A fabulous »hole« or »cave« is reputed to pin down the site of the ancestral emergence of the Ao Nagas at the "Six Stones" or Longtrok (DAS, N K 1994: 150; NAGALAND TOURISM circa 1996 s.a.), Lungterok (GANGULI, M 1970, 1976: 104), or Lungtrok (SMITH, W C 1925: 80). SITUATION: Occasionally »in« but sometimes »near« the village of »Chungliyimti« (SMITH , W C 1925: 80; DAS, N K 1994: 76, 150; AIER, I. Anungla 2009.07.01) or »Chongliyimti« (GANGULI, M 1970, 1976: 104), which is indicated as »Chomliemdi« near (±2.5 m) N26°16': E094°07' (note 1) and high up on a ridge above the eastern (orographically right) bank of the Longa River (note 2) at a location that lies at a linear distance of about 12 km approximately ESE from Mokokchung (note 3) or about 22 km in a direct line east from Tuensang (N26°17': E094°50') or at a travelling distance -- perhaps there and back again -- of »57 km from Tuensang« (NAGALAND TOURISM circa 1996 s.a.). CULTURAL HISTORY - hole of ancestral emergence: 1925: »… man is said to have come from Lungtrok (six stones) near the village of Chongliyimti« (SMITH, W C 1925: 80). 1994a: »According to one tradition, the ancestors of the Ao have emerged from six stones, located in the Sangtam-Naga village of Chungliyimti« (DAS, N K 1994: 76). 1994b: The Longtrok hole is »… located in the Sangtam Naga village of Chungliyimti« (DAS, N K 1994: 150). 1996 circa: »Longtrok -- Six Stones -- is located 57 km from Tuensang. According to Ao legend and beliefs, the first of the Ao ancestors had emerged from Longtrok. This spot also offers a beautiful view of the towns on hilltops scattered over the distant horizon« (NAGALAND TOURISM circa 1996 s.a.). 2007-2009: »An archaeological investigation was carried out at the ancestral site at Chungliyimti [note 4]« (AIER, I. Given the broad objective, an interdisciplinary approach comprising of folklore and oral tradition, archaeological exploration, rituals and festivals, and physical / morphological features of the Naga tribes were adopted, stated the press note. The first phase of the project covered the tribes of Kohima, Phek, and Mokokchung Districts. The folklore and oral tradition, symbolism of rituals and festivals, and the physical features of the various tribes were documented. Based on the study of oral tradition and folklore of the tribes, five prominent ancient settlement sites considered as important centres of population dispersal were identified.
