Description
A »cave« (note 1) of dubious character in recent alluvial sediments (a geologically unfavourable situation), which can be expected to be a man-made excavation or structure. The site (note 2) lies above the north (left) bank of Ganges river, situated within the city Varanasi itself, and on the Dasaswamedh Ghat (Dashashvamedha, Dasamedh Ghat) where Brahma sacrificed (medh) ten (das) horses (aswa). GLASENAPP (1928: 27, 39) reports a cave sacred to »dear Mother« (Mataji) in a state of eternal bliss (anand) and closed with a slab of stone.
NOTE 1: Manfred Moser (Regensburg, 1998 personal correspondence) forwarded the part of GLASENAPP (1928) relating to a cave sacred to »dear Mother« (Mataji). NOTE 2: DANIELL (1795: XVI) depicts the site with a huge colour engraving (size circa A1) titled »Dusasumade Ghat« showing man-made structures.
