Description
One single solitary »cave« (man-made rock-cut chamber used for religious purposes) or »caves« (KUMAR & KUMAR 1999) dedicated to Mahadeo (Shiva) and consisting of »a plain rectangular room with an enclosed shrine, the form of the cave being supported by four pillars« reports IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 13: 182) from among the archaeological remains in Hoshangabad district (note 1). SITUATION: At a travelling distance of about 30 or 40 km south from Hoshangabad (22°45'N: 77°43'E) and 10 or 20 km approximately south from Itarsi (N22°37': E77°45') near the village of Khatama (note 2). KUMAR & KUMAR (1999 figure 2: geological map after CROOKSHANK 1936: 238-240) indicate »Khatama Caves« in the upper reaches of one Zamani Nala (a tributary from the south-east to the Narmada / Narbada river) and at a linear distance of about 5 km approximately south-east from the village of Khatama and again about km south from the Central Railways station »Kiratpur R.S.« or Kiratgarh R.S. (note 3). POSITION: KUMAR & KUMAR (1999 figure 2: Geological map) show »Khatama Caves« near N22°28': E77°47' but mis-position »Khatama caves« (abstract) 217 km in a direct line too far north at N30°19': E77°45' (sic!).PALAEONTOLOGY: KUMAR & KUMAR (1999) report a complete microscopic insect and cuticle of a microscopic insect (ectparasite? poss. Rhicinus?: Mallophagae?) from the matrix (yellow-reddish sandy clay) of the Bagra conglomerates (Late Triassic: Norian to Rhaetian), which are either exposed »at Khatama caves« or on »the Zamani Nala near Khatama caves.«
NOTE 1: IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 13: 179-190): »Hoshangabad district … The archaeological remains are unimportant.« NOTE 2: Neither the village of Khatama nor the Khatama cave (IMPERIAL GAZETTEER (1907-1909, 13: 182) or Khatama caves (KUMAR & KUMAR 1999) is shown on AMS sheet NF43-08 Harda (U502 series, 1957 edition) or in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 71 F2). NOTE 3: »Kiratpur R.S.« (KUMAR & KUMAR 1999) appears to stand for the Central Railway station Kiratpur R.S. (N22°32': E077°46' nima.mil/geonames, accessed 16.11.2003) which is shown both on AMS sheet NF43-08 Harda (U502 series, 1957 edition) and in the India Road Atlas (Eicher Goodearth 2006: 71 F2) some 10 miles or 16 km south from Itarsi (N22°37': E077°45').
