Description
A terminal glacier cave (in ice) called Silla Samudar or Silla Samudr (note 1) is said to be situated in the glacier (west-south-west of Trisul peak, N30°19': E079°47') where the »Nandakgini« (Nandakini) river appears to rise: »We were told at Satol [N30°16'30" E079°42'20"] that about every 12 years a regular pilgrimage was made to Silla Samudr … [and] on these occasions 2000 goats were sacrificed there; but we were also told that exceedingly few of the pilgrims ever arrived at their journey's end --and we never found even a bone of one goat« (LONGSTAFF 1928: 421). Having arrived at the snout of the glacier (on 20 May 1927) the mountaineer Longstaff wasted no more thoughts on glacier caves and distracted himself with access routes to Trisul peak. On 23rd May, however, he observed just south of Rinti Saddle a »curious depressed hollow basin, giving the impression of a subsidence« --a closed depression that represents a dead ice hole (caused by melting ice) or a doline (originating from limestone dissolution)?
NOTE 1: The Silla Samudar or Silla Samudr glacier (LONGSTAFF 1928) is indicated as »Silisamudar Gal« (snout near N30°17'30”: E079°44') on AMS sheet NH44-06 Nanda Devi (U502 series, 1959 edition).
