Royal Artillery Sink

Description
A seasonal (monsoon) stream finds it's way into an impenetrable sink on the way to the Adawa (Udawan) area (note 1). SITUATION 1946: »It lies one mile [1.6 km] by path and a half mile [800 m]direct West of the Bodyar F.R.H. [Budher Forest Rest House]. Take the south track down spur from F.R.H. and turn right at the first saddle after 1/2 mile [800 m]. Follow the path over one saddle to the 2nd saddle after the right turn, just beyond a clumb of rhododendron trees. Strike half left from the main path, path a small pond to where a small stream sinks beneath a scar of limestone (250 yds from the saddle)« (Leakey 1946.08.01 Mss: Bodhyar area potholes). SITUATION 1951: From »Bodhyar [sic!] Area: Bodhyer [sic] or Budher [sic!] Forest Rest House … WSW between one and two miles« (LEAKEY 1955: 58). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1946: »R.A. Pot. So called because units of the Royal Art'y [Artillery] dug there in July 46. […] The R.A. dug close under the scar where an old entrance appeared to be & got 12 ft. down, but sides fell in« (Leakey 1946.08.01 Mss: Bodhyar area potholes). CAVE DESCRIPTION 1951: A »… definite monsoon sink fed by a small catchment area [note 2] (not very common in these hills owing to their steepness), where in 1945 units of the British Army did a certain amount of digging with no result« (LEAKEY 1955: 58).

D. Leakey uses the term "catchment area" to designate an obvious stream bed (headwaters) or closed depression draining surface water straight into that cave entrance enterable by soldiers or humans.
